We count our lucky stars for the day a message from Melanie pinged in our newly-minted email address. Melanie’s friendly communication, experience with animals, professional skills, enthusiasm and kindness emanated from that email and we immediately knew she’d quickly become an integral part of our team.
In her role as Sanctuary Co-ordinator, Melanie is the dedicated point of contact for sanctuaries, shelters and rescues. She works with primary carers across Australia to determine crisis, urgent and ongoing needs; maintains detailed sanctuary portfolio cards; prepares orders for dispatch by the Distribution Centre; prepares the weekly supplies list and provides a compassionate and kind ear to carers, often in high levels of distress.
You can always be confident that regardless of how stressful the circumstances, Melanie will greet you with joy and make you feel happy to have encountered her.
Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Melanie.
Why is volunteering for Animal Patrons Australia important to you?
Volunteering with Animal Patrons Australia is important to me because it provides me with the opportunity to work with a group of people that share the same passions that I do, and I can do more for animals/carers in need when and where I can. Animals have and always will be a huge part of my life! I have a lot of respect for people on the front line that dedicate their lives to saving wildlife and animals in need selflessly, so any way I can give them a helping hand I will. I’m very grateful for Karan giving me this opportunity.
What animal related volunteering have you done in the past?
I’ve volunteered at an animal hospital in Thailand when I finished high school. I was so inspired by the vets there after seeing how they were with my guinea pig in his last few hours of life so I wanted to be a part of it. I then did a Cert II in Animal Studies as part of my Cert IV in Vet Nursing and volunteered for over 6 months in a vet clinic here in Melbourne outside of my full-time work hours, before working full-time at a vet clinic for a few months. I also volunteered for a few weeks in a cat boarding facility over Christmas – that was fun! Cats are my favourite so to be surrounded by a bunch of cats (and personalities) was great.
Are you the parent of any animals at the moment?
Am I ever! I have four fur babies – 2 dogs (Lulu, my Bichon-cross, and Charlie, my Labrador) and 2 cats (Bailey, my ragdoll, and Milo, my chunky domestic).
What is your Spirit Animal?
Cat – no need to think about this one. 😊
When you’re not moonlighting as an Animal Patron, what do you do for work?
I work as a Project Officer for the Victorian Government. I enjoy project work but would like to go back to vet nursing part-time in the future.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I don’t have too much spare time, to be honest! But I love doing jigsaw puzzles and reading. I love snowboarding, free diving and scuba diving. And I love to travel! I do manage to go to the gym everyday though as something for myself. And now I get to help coordinate wildlife shelter needs 😊
